Ireland Women's Rugby And Italy Meet In 2024 Women's Six Nations

Ireland women's rugby and Italy women's rugby will have the spotlight to themselves Sunday as they face off at Dublin’s RDS Arena for the second week of competition in the 2024 Guinness Women’s Six Nations.

Both teams struggled and suffered losses in the opening week of action, so they’re sitting winless with Wales at the bottom of the table. The difference, however, is that Italy and Ireland faced the top two teams in the competition – also two of the top three teams in the World Rankings – in No. 1 England and No. 3 France, respectively.

Now, it’s time to spin the momentum in the right direction, at least for one of the teams, as there’s still plenty of time left in this year’s Women’s Six Nations and so much for which to play.

The last time someone other than England or France won the coveted Women’s Six Nations trophy was 2015, and that was Ireland. Since the competition expanded to six teams in 2002, England has won 14 times, including the last five. France has won six times, and Ireland has been victorious twice.

In 2023, Ireland was 0-5 and finished in last place with zero points. Italy didn’t fare much better, finishing one spot higher with a 1-4 record and four points.

Heading into this week’s matchup, Italy is pivoting and making some lineup changes that were necessitated by injures in last week’s 48-0 loss to England.

In last season’s meeting between Ireland and Italy, the Italians prevailed 24-7, but there may be some luck on the Irish side this time, as the home team has won every time since 2018.

Can the Irish women, who lost to France last week 38-17, get things going and join Ireland's men in the Six Nations winner's circle?

Up next for Ireland will be visit from Wales on April 13, while Italy travels to meet France on April 14.
