France Perfect, England 2nd in Women Six Nations
Report on Round 5 of the Women's Six nations
France won the Women’s Six Nations with a convincing 38-3 defeat of Wales to secure the Grand Slam.
France’s defense has been superb, holding Scotland, Italy, Ireland, and Wales to only six points. The only team to score any tries on France was England, which scored 17 in the 18-17 nailbiter that France won in the final moments.
France scored six minutes into this game, when wing Cyrielle Banet fielded a clearance kick, weaved and galloped through most of the Welsh defense, and popped a pass to scrumhalf Pauline Bourdon, who slid through the North Wales mud to score.
Bourdon set up flyhalf Caroline Drouin for the next try, and with flanker Celine Ferer leading an imposing effort in the forwards, France continued to roll.
France didn’t wilt even in the rain, sending the ball wide where brilliant fullback Jessy Trémoulière and wing Caroline Boujard were both able to score.
It was a complete effort from France, who showed they can score over you, around you, and through you, and at the same time defend until the final meter.
Meanwhile, also on Friday, England beat Ireland 33-11. Danielle Waterman scored her 47th try for her country - the most by any England player. It was a typically powerful England performance, not full of sideline-to-sideline action, but all strength and grit. At 34 minutes it was 12-6 for England, but as the game wore on the English punished a tired Ireland team with tries from Amy Cokayne, Ellie Kildunne, and Amber Reed.
France wins the Six Nations with a 5-0 record, while England takes second at 4-1.
Ireland sits 3rd right now at 2-3, but Scotland could overhaul the Irish with a big win over Italy on Sunday.
