Day One of the NAI 7s is in the books and some familiar faces (or jerseys) are at the top.

Girls Elite U18

Familiar faces are not what has dominated at the elite level in the Girls U18 brackets, as South Bay and Barbarians both ended the day 3-0.

South Bay was strong and dominated the point of contact in a crushing of HEB Hurricanes, a close one over Oregon, and an even closer one over a skilled Atlantis team.

The Barbarians out of Canada were just a little better and moving the ball and played aggressively in poaching in the breakdowns. 

Girls U16

The Barbarians were hardly touchable in the U16 bracket. While they didn’t field an especially big team, they were quick, and powerful in the tackle. Only Rocky Mountain Rebels were at all close, as the Barbarians racked up big scores in going 4-0.

Men U20

The new men’s under 20 league is a round-bind with all six teams playing five games before final placement games. Eagle Impact had to battle to beat Upright Rugby 15-10, but cruised through the rest of the day.

Canadian Misfits looked as dominant, and played some strong team defense, but were physically overpowered in the final day’s game, against Upright, leaving both at 2-1.

Also 2-1 was Stars. Led by some super skill from the likes of Koryan Harris, and some good playmaking by Alex Churra, the Stars beat Arizona and Rhino convincingly, but fell to the Misfits. The Stars have Upright and EIRA on Saturday, which won’t be easy.

The Misfits vs EIRA game at 11:20 am will decide who plays in the final.

Boys Elite U18

This bracket has been a repeat of last year’s Boys U18s, with Eagle Impact Rugby Academy and Atlantis on a collision course. 

Atlantis is greatly changed, but Mike Weir is back and he’s played some brilliant rugby, and with Jon Rodriguez a snappy scrumhalf and Angus Kelly running hard, they created a combination that was hard to stop.

Atlantis played its best rugby at the end of the day, unleashing some nifty plays in beating 2-0 Upright 27-0.

EIRA, lead by powerfully-built Dominic Tianga, who seemed to create tries thanks to his physicality in the tackle forcing turnovers. The key game for EIRA was the first, coming back from 21-7 to win 26-21. Will Chevalier tied the game with a clutch conversion and helped set up the win.

Boys U18 Open

EVO 7s exploded for a 3-0 day in the U18 Open, while Rock Rugby fielded two teams and went 5-1. Herriman finished 2-0-1, but EVO outscored opponents 76 to 17 on the day.

Boys U16s

Barbarians lead Pool A with a 3-0 record while Mambas, Belmont Shore, and USA South all showed flashes, but also had difficulties. Belmont Shore’s close win over South allowed Mambas to finish first among three 2-1 teams.

U14s

The Barbarians lead the girls fairly clearly while three teams are 2-1 among the boys - South, 5786, and Barbarians.
