While we're knee deep in 15s in college rugby in the Northeast and Midwest, the West Coast is gearing up for sevens - the West Coast 7s.

Heading up an impressive lineup of teams for the October 6 preliminary event and the October 20-21 finale LIVE on FloRugby is a UCLA Bruins team many should watch out for.

UCLA finished 2nd in the CRC in the spring, and most of that group, plus some impressive freshmen, return for this season.

"We have six players who were freshmen last year," said head coach Scott Stewart. "Several of them played sevens all summer and did really well. We are definitely one of the younger teams, but it's a smart team with a lot of rugby IQ."

Shane Barry is one of the new players - he is part of a Barry dynasty brewing at UCLA. He played for the Ramblin' Jesters touring side at the RugbyTown 7s, and was joined by Eric Naposki and Ben Broselle, who both excelled over the summer. All three are HS All Americans or have played extensively with Eagle Impact Rugby Academy.

"Playing at that level can help you be calm under pressure," said Stewart. 

The Bruins showed poise under pressure at the CRC, making the final before losing to Lindenwood. There, UCLA found that they didn't quite have the size to battle the Lions. That means the Bruins will have to rely even more on their speed, fitness, intelligence, and skill. 

But looking at the lineup, there's plenty of veterans - if young - leadership, including: Broselle, Naposki, Patrick Regan, Patrick French, Yanick Mendes, and Christian Bernard, with several other talented players battling for spots, too, UCLA has an excellent shot at winning at West Coast.

"We were good last year because we also had a good bench, and I think we have good depth this year," said Stewart. "The quality of players coming off the bench is really high. We need that, especially in the tough tournaments like the West Coast 7s."
