South Teams Lead In Men D2 7s
A look at Day One of the Men's D2 College 7s Championships.
South Conference teams East Carolina and UNC-Charlotte ended pool play 3-0 in the Men’s D2 College 7s Championships.
Charlotte, defending national champs, but a team that lost to ECU in the South Conference tournament, took care of Willian Paterson, Bloomsburg, and, most notably, Iowa Central, to win Pool B.
WPU was a somewhat unlucky 3rd in the pool, unleashing some impressive footwork and team play, but in the end losing 21-19 to the 49ers on the final play of the game when Blake Jackson squirmed out of a tackle and raced in for the game-tying try. Jackson then won it with the conversion.

East Carolina defeated Norwich, Montana State, and IUPUI in emphatic fashion, while Principia lost Pool C after almost tying Wisconsin-Whitewater 19-19 on the last play of the game. Pincipia had the conversion to kick in front of the posts, and missed. Whitewater and Principia would have ended up 2-0-1, with Principia taking 1st on points difference, thanks in large part to TreVaughn Goodman’s six tries. Instead, Whitewater, who didn’t quite play its dominating game, but just edged NC State in a tight one, took 1st
NC State, however, gets another shot, as the Wolfpack was one of two third-place teams to make the quarters.
Here are the quarterfinal matchups, which includes a rematch of last year’s final:
East Carolina vs William Paterson
Principia vs Iowa Central
Norwich vs UW-Whitewater
UNC-Charlotte vs NC State
Consolation semis:
Montana State vs Hartford
IUPUI vs Bloomsburg
