Sirker, Prem 7s Breakout, Eyes Place In Wasps XV
Last year's breakout star in the Premiership 7s, Callum Sirker hopes he can crack the Wasps XV's team in 2019
For young, up-and-coming players in England, the Premiership 7s is a primetime showcase to demonstrate their skills, abilities, and athleticism in front of upper management.
The two-day tournament, held at Northampton's Franklin's Gardens, is an annual event that offers a preview of who tomorrow's stars will be.
Since the tournament's inception in 2010, more than 43 players who have participated have gone on to play test rugby, including six who represented the British Lions on their tour to New Zealand. These include Owen Farrell, George Kruis, Jack Nowell, Anthony Watson, Ross Moriarty, and Elliot Daly.
Another pair of Premiership 7s participants, Blaine Scully and Will Hooley, have gone on to establish themselves as key members of Gary Gold's 2019 USA World Cup roster.
Who shined last year?
The breakout performer from last year's competition was Callum Sirker.
The then-20-year-old lit it up for Wasps, en route to a second-place finish. His experience playing with England on the HSBC 7s tour undoubtedly helped him, and his fancy footwork and pure speed caught the eye of many coaches in the Wasps setup.
Although he left the 15s code for two years to focus on international 7s, the gas-man is back with his childhood club, and excited to be presented with the opportunity to play professional 15s for Wasps.
After his blistering display a year ago in the Premiership 7s, Sirker was offered a chance to kick on with the Wasps pro side. His adjustment back to 15s was awkward, but he feels like year two is going to be easier.
“Coming from a sevens background, I needed to sharpen my understanding of 15s,” he told Premiership Rugby. “You can’t run sideways and score five tries a game! Sevens is a great pathway and I loved my time there, but one thing I realized is that it’s not the same kind of game.
"There’s a different way of playing 15s and it took some time to understand that, but it clicked in the end and now I feel really comfortable with where I’m at."
He'll get his opportunity to impress the staff over the next two months, when he and his Wasps teammates play in the second annual edition of the Premiership Cup.
The Premiership Cup is a domestic tournament between the Premiership sides in England which is driven at getting more game time for younger players.

With many internationals away for the World Cup, it's the best time for the next generation of English talent to put their hands up for duty.
"The Cup is a really good way of pushing for a Premiership place, and that’s exactly what we aim to do," Sirker added. "Everyone at Wasps wants to put the badge on every weekend, no matter what competition it is, so the Cup is just another opportunity to continue wearing that shirt week-in, week-out."
Should head coach Dai Young present Callum Sirker with a chance to sport the Wasps crest, he has every intention to make the most of it.
"When Dai gives me my opportunity, it’s my choice whether I take it or not, and I’m going to give it my all to grasp that opportunity."
