Changing Of The Guard: 5 Major Coaching Changes For 2020
Changing Of The Guard: 5 Major Coaching Changes For 2020
Heading into the next World Cup cycle, there will be plenty of coaching changes for top teams.

Now that the dust has settled on the 2019 World Cup, it's time to look forward to the next World Cup cycle.
Some of the biggest names in coaching have moved on, leaving a number of the best teams in the world to start the rebuilding process.
Here's a look at the five biggest changes as we move into the new year:
1. New Zealand - Out: Steve Hansen | In: Ian Foster

The most notable departure is that of New Zealand head coach Sir Steve Hansen. After serving as an All Blacks assistant under coach Sir Graham Henry from 2004-2011, Hansen took over the top job after the 2011 World Cup.
The Kiwi finishes his All Blacks tenure with a record of 93 wins, 10 losses, and 4 draws, winning 6 Rugby Championship titles, and the all-important 2015 Rugby World Cup trophy. Longtime assistant Ian Foster will fill the vacancy left by Hansen.
2. Wales - Out: Warren Gatland | In: Wayne Pivac

Warren Gatland, arguably the greatest coach in Welsh history, also steps down after coaching Wales from 2008-2019. He finishes his Wales run with 4 Six Nations titles, 3 Grand Slams, and two appearances in the World Cup semifinals.
He leaves to take over the top job for the Chiefs in Super Rugby, but will also coach the British Lions one last time in 2021 when they tour to South Africa. Former Scarlets boss Wayne Pivac takes over from Gatland.
3. Ireland - Out: Joe Schmidt | In: Andy Farrell

Joe Schmidt leaves Ireland after leading the men in green through one of the country's greatest ever periods of rugby. From 2013-2019, Schmidt compiled an incredible record of 53 wins, 19 losses, and 1 draw as head coach of Ireland.
Schmidt won the Six Nations three times, including one Grand Slam, and defeated the mighty All Blacks on two separate occasions. Andy Farrell, father of Owen, will become the new Ireland head coach, having served as Ireland's defense coach since 2016.
4. Australia - Out: Michael Cheika | In: Dave Rennie

Michael Cheika, head coach of Australia from 2014-2019, was ousted after underperforming over the past three years and bowing out of this year's World Cup in the quarterfinals.
He ends his run with the Wallabies owning a record of 34 wins, 32 losses, and 3 draws, with 1 Rugby Championship title, and a runner-up finish in the 2015 World Cup. Dave Rennie, former Chiefs and Glasgow Warriors boss, will replace him as the head man.

5. France - Out: Jacques Brunel | In: Fabien Galthier

Lastly, France head coach Jacques Brunel will see his three-year tenure come to an end. France have been one of rugby's biggest disappointments since they came within moments of winning the 2011 World Cup.
The sub-par performance of the French side over the past eight years has the country itching to reestablish itself as one of the world's elite rugby nations. New boss, legendary French scrumhalf Fabien Galthier, will inherit a young team loaded with some of the very best talent in the world.
Hopes and expectations are high for France, who host the 2023 World Cup and have won each of the past two World Rugby U-20 championships.
