Four BOLD Predictions For The Weekend

Looking ahead to the upcoming weekend of rugby, there are a number of huge fixtures on tap. Major League Rugby moves into its third round, the Six Nations resumes, and collegiate rugby marches on through the teeth of its season.

Here are four bold predictions concerning the action this weekend:

1.) Two-Time Defending Champs Fall To 0-3

It's been an inauspicious start for the 2018 and 2019 MLR champs, as the Seattle Seawolves have dropped each of their first two games of the 2020 season, falling on the road to both the San Diego Legion and Old Glory DC.

The Seawolves will return to the comfort of their home Starfire Sports Complex this Saturday night, but their opponents will be just as tough. Visiting town will be the 2-0 Toronto Arrows, who held off a spirited Houston Sabercats comeback a week ago.

Life on the road will become the norm for Toronto in the first half of the season; the Arrows won't play at home until April, so they know the tough journey that lies ahead.

We think the Arrows establish themselves this Saturday as the league's road warriors, and exact some revenge on the team that eliminated them from the semi-finals a season ago.

Prediction: Seattle 24-25 Toronto

2.) Wales Ends France's Grand Slam Hopes

Flying high are Les Bleus, with a new coach and a 2-0 start to the Six Nations. Chalked full of young talent, this French side looks like it could genuinely become a favorite for the 2023 World Cup in France.

However, there's a long road ahead of them till then, and for now their sights are dead-set on winning their first Six Nations title since 2010. They've gotten off to a rocking start, defeating World Cup runners-up England in Round 1, and staving off the Italians in Round 2.

Spirits are high in the French camp, but they're about to come crashing back to earth when Les Bleus visit the Principality in Wales. France has lost eight of the past nine contests against the Welsh, and we suspect they'll fall victim yet again on Saturday.

Prediction: Wales 24-20 France

3.) Life Bounces Back, Upsets Lindenwood

In arguably the upset of the year last weekend, the Life Running Eagles dropped their first contest since the 2017 National Title game against Saint Mary's, when they were beaten in Jonesboro by the Arkansas State Red Wolves.

The loss ended a 29-game D1A winning streak, a mightily impressive feat considering Life competes in the Mid-South alongside Lindenwood, Navy, Arkansas State, Clemson, and Davenport. With Arkansas State proving that Life is indeed beatable, could the Running Eagles be at their most vulnerable point in years?

They could be, especially with #2 ranked Lindenwood coming to town. The Lions have started the year unbeaten, including a 38-20 victory over Arkansas State two weeks ago. They have all the reason to believe that 2020 is the season they finally get over the hump and go all the way.

However, we think that Life addresses its deficiencies from the ASU loss and comes out a much different side on Saturday.

Prediction: Life 22-19 Lindenwood

4.) Austin Picks Up First Win In Two Years

It's been a long time coming for Austin to pick up a win in the MLR. Its last Major League victory came against the Utah Warriors in Week 7 of the 2018 season. The franchise has dropped 20 straight games since that day, and are desperate to taste success once again.

On Saturday night, those same Utah Warriors will roll into Austin to take on the Gilgronis at the Circuit of the Americas, hoping to build off their wild comeback win in Vegas against the Freejacks last week.

The Gilgronis, meanwhile, lost a 49-31 shootout to RUNY in Round 2, but there were signs of encouragement in the second half. The AG's showed that when they maintained discipline and played with intent they could cause serious damage with ball-in-hand.

Additionally, they'll add the services of enormous All Black prop Jamie Mackintosh to the mix for this weekend, a move that will certainly assist the AG's against the massive Warriors pack.

The 20-game losing streak comes to an end on Saturday, and the Gilgronis upset the high-flying Utah Warriors.

Prediction: Austin 34-30 Utah
