MLR, D1A, & LA Sevens: 10 Monday Notes
MLR, D1A, & LA Sevens: 10 Monday Notes
MLR teams are distinguishing the contenders from the pretenders, D1A is proving to be wide open, and LA Sevens delivered mixed results on the weekend.

The Six Nations had another week off, but in the meanwhile Major League Rugby entered into its fourth week, while D1A rugby treated us to four top 25 matchups on Saturday. Additionally, the first edition of the new LA Sevens took place, with mixed reviews.
Here are ten notes from the weekend:
1. Toronto Is The Team To Beat
The Toronto Arrows emerged victorious on the road against Rugby ATL on Sunday, 28-18, improving their record to 4-0. The Arrows are proving they can beat teams in a variety of ways, whether it's through their dominant forward pack and set piece like we saw against Austin, their open field playmaking as they displayed against Houston, their immensely strong kicking game that was used to beat Seattle, or their well-balanced and patient approach which came in handy as they erased a halftime deficit this weekend to Atlanta.
Four road games and four wins indicate that the men from north of the border are the hottest team in the competition right now, and will likely continue that good form moving forward.
2. Seattle Finally Rights The Ship
After a head-scratching 0-3 start, the two-time defending champion Seawolves finally got in the win column on Saturday night, winning a shootout with the New England Freejacks. The 44-29 win should hopefully get the ball rolling for Seattle, who host Utah in the coming week looking to move to 2-3.
3. Colorado Also Finds Its First Win
The second of three winless teams in the MLR this year also ended their drought, as the Raptors defeated the Utah Warriors to move into the win column in the Western Conference. In front of a strong crowd in Glendale, the Raptors earned a much-needed 22-14 win, which puts them back into the mix in West.
4. Three Wins On The Bounce For Old Glory
Old Glory DC held off a spirited Austin comeback over the weekend to win its third straight contest and improve to 3-1 on the season. After racing out to a 20-0 lead, Old Glory seemed in control, but the Gilgronis got hot and road the momentum to bring the scores to 23-19 with six minutes to play. However, DC maintained its composure and scored a late try to win 28-19 and deny Austin a bonus point.
5. San Diego Stays Perfect With Gritty Road Win
The Legion remain the league's only other unbeaten team, but they sure survived a scare on Saturday down in New Orleans. San Diego trailed 14-12 at halftime, but managed to grind their way through the second half to escape the Bayou with a 25-21 win.
6. RUNY Getting Hot
RUNY also picked up its third straight win on Sunday, taking down the Sabercats 31-23 in Houston and moving into second place in the East.
The team allegedly has a crew of players still yet to arrive as a result of visa issues; should those boys turn up soon, RUNY could become a seriously dangerous threat to Toronto in the Eastern Conference.
7. D1A Rugby Is Wide Open In 2020
It seems like this year, more than ever, anybody could go and win the D1A title. Whereas in the past three or four years the only genuine contenders were Life, Cal, Saint Mary's, and Lindenwood, we now have at least 7 teams that can put their hands up as threats to take the title.
Between Cal, Life, Lindenwood, Saint Mary's, Navy, Central Washington, Arkansas State, and Arizona, we're seeing more parity across the competition than we're used to seeing as of late.
8. Some Eye-Opening D1A Results This Weekend
#1 Cal fell on the road to University of British Columbia, 31-8, meaning the Golden Bears lose the two-game aggregate series 52-44.
#2 Life thrashed the Red River Conference front-runners Texas A&M 112-0, while a second-string #3 Lindenwood side handled Illinois 50-7.
#4 Saint Mary's outlasted UCLA in a high scoring affair, winning 60-25 on the road.
In perhaps the biggest result of the weekend, #10 Central Washington put #5 BYU to the sword, slicing the Cougars up to the tune of 51-7. Given the Cougars recent one-point loss to Saint Mary's, this result is a sign that the Wildcats may just be the biggest darkhorse in D1A.
In another statement win on the weekend, #7 Navy clobbered #6 Arkansas State 36-5, throwing the Mid-South for a loop.
The Midshipmen haven't played a cup match for some time now, but didn't seem to be rusty in the least bit. The Red Wolves will now come back to earth, having beaten #1 Life and #23 Clemson in the past two weeks.
Lastly, #11 Arizona ran riot against the typically formidable Utah Utes, winning 107-0. Along with their previous win against UCLA, the Wildcats appear to be rounding into some really good form just before the playoffs.
9. LA Sevens Was Hit & Miss
Many folks were disappointed when they discovered that the iconic Las Vegas 7s would be relocating to California beginning in 2020 and continuing through 2023. The voyage to Vegas has become a sort of Mecca for rugby fans all around the country and all around the world.

Therefore, scrutiny surrounded the event this year, with many skeptics committed to the idea that LA would never be able to stand up to Vegas. In a sense, they were right. Attendance in LA was much lower than it had been in Las Vegas, and there didn't seem to be the same hype surrounding the event this year as in previous years.
However, one of the chief complaints with Vegas was always the narrow field at Sam Boyd Stadium and the rock hard field turf they players played on. LA Sevens addressed both of these issues, and it can certainly be argued that the product on the field was an improvement from Vegas.
10. The LA Final Between Fiji & RSA Is An Instant Classic
That final between South Africa and Fiji will be remembered for a long time as a classic match. The quality of the teams at the moment is extremely exciting as we get closer and closer to the Olympics in Tokyo.
