Santa Clara Players Savor Bowl Win
Santa Clara had a rough day on Day One of the West Coast 7s, but showed their class with three wins to take the Bowl on Day Two.
The Broncos had a ton of work to do after a slow start, losing 32-0 to Arizona State - a Day One performance the team said was their worst. Then Santa Clara lost 17-0 to UCLA, which, while not a good game offensively, showed they could play some defense in holding the eventual finalists to just the three tries.
Then the Broncos surprised Cal Maritime 19-14. That ended up having three teams (Santa Clara, Cal Maritime, and Arizona State) tied at 1-2. Cal Maritime made the Cup Quarterfinals on points difference, and Santa Clara and Arizona State moved on to the bowl bracket.
On Day two, it start to come together, with wins over San Diego and Sac State setting up a dramatic final game against Stanford.
In the end, Santa Clara ended the tournament with four straight victories, and something to build on.
